Unlike the other legendary Ribera Estate, Vega Sicilia, Pesquera Reserva is made entirely from 100% Tinta del Pais - the local name given to Ribera's own thick-skinned version of Tempranillo. Sourced from older vines, and aged for 24-30 rather than 18 months in oak (followed by 12 months in bottle), the Reserva is a significantly more intense, powerful and nuanced version of its younger sibling. The Fernández' team have been known to drop 50% of the fruit to regulate the yields, and the style balances the power and complexity of the resulting low yields and minimal handling, with the classic high-grown freshness of the region. The result is a layered, structured red with a core of silky, ripe fruits (black currant, sarsaparilla, cedar, a twist of leather), complexed by savoury bracken notes and with a long, driven and vibrantly fresh close.

Initial cola and root-beer aromas precede floral berry scents. A strict palate is firm but avoids crushing weight. Narrow plum, currant and berry flavors are focused and framed by roaring tannins. This is still young and tough, but with great potential; drink from 2019-2035.

This muscular red has an austere character, with assertive tannins and bitter notes that underlie flavors of loamy earth, tar and licorice. Shows depth, while hints of cherry and fresh herb open on the finish. Decant. Best from 2019 through 2028. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 420 cases imported.
